What you must have in mind is to check the page rank of those websites you subscribe. The most important web directory is DMOZ.com. There are thousands of websites that use DMOZ in their own directories. The bad news is that it is difficult to subscribe to DMOZ. It can take up to couple of months to see your site in the directory. Join at least 20-30 directories.

Make yourself a template document with your website description with different lengths of descriptions (to some directories exist a maximum lenght of the input fields ), keywords.
